He is also known as Six Syllable Lokeswara. The 6 syllables are OM MANI PADME HUM. This mantra is considered to be so important that it is carved on rock faces and chanted constantly by devotees. He is white, decorated with crowns and jewels, and holds a rosary and a lotus in two of his four arms. The other two hold a jewel which is regarded as a symbol of knowledge. He is said to have descended into hell, converted and liberated the wicked, and then led them to the paradise of his spiritual father, the Buddha Amitabha. Then Avalokiteswara discovered that for every culprit converted and liberated, another instantly took his place. According to legend, his head split into ten pieces from grief and despair on discovering the extent of wickedness and the utter hopelessness of saving mankind. Amitabha then made each piece into a head, and replaced them on Avalokiteswara. Thus he has 22 eyes instead of two, to see all suffering and eleven brains instead of one, to concentrate on the best means to save mankind. 11.
